“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.” – Luke 2:10-11

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

After weeks of waiting for Christmas to arrive, we now sit days away from the much-anticipated birth of Christ: “O come, O come Emmanuel”, we sing out.

God often works through the unexpected, unlikely, and lowly. In the story of Christmas, we see God work through the unexpected Mary to deliver the son of God who will come to save us. When Jesus is born, the angel of the Lord appears to the lowly shepherds to deliver the good news.

The birth of Jesus the Messiah is good news “for all the people”, the angel to the shepherds declares. This Christmas, I invite you to open your hearts to this story and to share the good news to the unexpected, the unlikely, and the lowly. “What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.” (John 1:3-4) The news of the Messiah’s birth is our chance to shine light to a dark world.

Joy to the world, share the good news: Christ was sent to live among us, to be with us – to be with you!

Merry Christmas!

Bishop David Zellmer
