At the 2021 Synod Assembly, a resolution was passed which tasked Bishop Hagmaier with sending a letter to Governor Noem and our state legislators urging them to pass legislation expanding Medicaid in South Dakota. The resolution also charged the Bishop and Synod Staff to develop a resource for congregations to discuss the importance of expanding health coverage to all South Dakotans.
You can find the one-page resource, as well as the letter from the Bishop to elected officials linked to this email. You can find the link to the ELCA Social Statement on Healthcare here. As Bishop Hagmaier states in her letter to elected officials, we know that expanding Medicaid is a complex issue and there are faithful people on different sides of the debate. We hope these resources can be tools in aiding faithful, solutions-orientated conversations on this issue.
