The South Dakota Synod, in partnership with the Helpline Center and Lutheran Social Services, will be hosting three Mental Health First Aid Training sessions this fall around the Synod. Each training will be from 8:00am to 5:00pm local time. Participants will have an hour lunch break and can choose to either bring their own lunch or go pick something up. There is no cost to attend, but there is a limit of 30 participants per event. Registration deadline is September 30th at noon. The schedule for the training sessions is:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 4th – Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave NE, Aberdeen, SD 57401
  • Tuesday, Oct. 4th – LSS Bragstad Room (1st Floor), 705 E 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57105
  • Tuesday, Oct. 11th – South Canyon Lutheran Church, 700 S 44th St, Rapid City, SD 57702

LEARN HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults. You’ll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to those who are struggling. You’ll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support.

AFTER THE COURSE, YOU’LL BE ABLE TO:

  • Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
  • Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
  • Understand how to interact with a person in crisis.
  • Know how to connect a person with help.
  • Use self-care tools and techniques.
