Lenten Lectures
Sunday Evenings, March 19–April 9 6–7:15 p.m., First Lutheran Church Sanctuary

Please join South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Delta David Gier, for lectures on Bach’s monumental “B minor Mass,” during Lent. This great masterpiece represents the only time Bach, a Lutheran, set the full text of the Latin mass. Why did he do so, and at the very end of his career, at the height of his powers, with no commission nor occasion for performance? Knowing that the vast majority of Bach’s works were intended for corporate worship, how should we experience this piece today?

Joining Maestro Gier will be First Lutheran Senior Pastor, Dr. John Christopherson; Father Charles Cimpl, Pastor at Holy Spirit Church and the Vicar General of the Diocese of Sioux Falls; J. Mark Bertrand, novelist and teaching elder at Grace Presbyterian Church (Presbyterian Church in America); Zachary Rygiel, Director of Worship & Music at First Lutheran; and Dr. James Johnson, Chorus Master of the SDSO.

The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra will perform the B minor Mass on Saturday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 23, at 2:30 p.m., at the Washington Pavilion. For tickets please visit sdsymphony.org
